"King Lear" (PART I)

Morning, 3rd-year class!

Time for you to start reading "King Lear", by William Shakespeare (the third play in your book). Before you get started, look at these words from the play:
From today, I will not be your father. You will be a stranger to me and to my heart.

Also, look at the pictures on pp. 49, 51 and 54 of your book.

Post a comment:
What problems might King Lear have
with his family, his friends and his enemies?

Now read PART I in your book (pp. 49 to 55) and complete exercises 6.1 to 6.3 on pp. 56 and 57 (we'll check them in class, on August 6th).

Happy reading!
Gladys

  1. Gladys: I thought that we hadn't to do anything about King Lear on internet.. and yesterday, I was reading my diary and the activities that we had to do, and suddenly I started thinking that you could post something about it and I didn't post anything. So, I'm here.. I read the book.. and the first part it's actually sad. The things that King Lear did were wrong in my opinion.. I wouldn't tell him if I loved him o not.. He must know it!! And I'm very angry with the things that Edmund did! See you! Sofia I. 3ºC :)

  2. Great to read you here, Sofía!!! So you've read the whole of the play? Then you're ready to comment on Part II too!

I understand your sympathy for Cordelia. It's clear King Lear is not really a good father... or isn't it? Let's see what your partners have to say about this!
    Happy holidays,
    Gladys

  3. Well, some problems with his family who could have is that he (King Lear) should not have asked if his daughters loved him, because if they did it would part of his kingdom, so their daughters will could have lied to him, only for the kingdom of his father.
The problems could come to have with their partners (Duke of Albany and Duke of Cornwall) is that they take advantage of its location and seduce their wives to their father over land granted to them.
A problem that can have its enemies, is that they offer more land than they have to ality King (Duke of Albany and Duke of Cornwall), to help defeat the King Lear.

  4. What problems might King Lear have
with his family, his friends and his enemies?

First of all, I believe that a father, must never ask his daughters who loves him more,to offer her a part of a kingdom because one of they can lie to get it.
besides i think that he couldn't have problems with his desicion because his others daughters was married.

  5. According with the question you are giving, i think that he shouldn't have asked if his daugthers loved him, because they probably would lie him to get the part of the kingdom that he have promised them.
In my opinion he isn't a good father.

  7. To answer the question, first of all, I agree with Antonella and Martin, because his daughters could lie him for to get the best part of the kindgdom.
I think that he was an ingenuous king and when one of his daughters told him the truth, he hate her because he didn´t want to listen that.

  8. At first, the father should not have ask to his dauthers that who loves him more. They could lie to him, and got her part of the kingdom.. he was a fool and ingenuous.
And I think he could't make the things in that way. He was wrong.
He had problems with his enemies. That enemies were friends before.

  9. King Lear has a big problem with his family because his daughters didn´t love him. They only said that they love him because they wanted to get the best part of the kindgdom.
I think that he is not a good father because he doesn´t like to hear the truth from his daughters.
He realised the problem with his daughters when he visited their homes.

  10. Actually I think that the King was wrong when he started asking about of his daughters feelings because they could lie, and he won't know it. Altough, he ends knowing the truth of everything. He made a mistake when he began to explain the way that he wanted to give out his kingdom.
His friend, The Earl of Gloucester helped him to escape, and it was a good thing... But nobody else helped him, their enemies were happy bescause of his sadness.

  11. I think is a sad history, based in lies an treasons to people that the only thing which they wanted was the power and lands of the King. Edmund was jealous of his brother, so he wrote a letter to incriminate him. His father had to throw him out of his castle. Edmund's acts were terrible. He didn'd help his father when he was incriminate to help the french army. He seduced GOneril and Regan, althoug they were married. In my opinion, he was the cause of many deahts, directly or indirectly.
However, Goneril and Regan were the causing of Lear's madness and later his death.

  12. King Lear has a problem with his family because his daugthers didn't love him maybe because he wasn't a good father.
His daugthers said that they loved him for to take the most part of the kingdoom.
The king didn't want to listen the truth.

  13. I think that King Lear it's very sad, he wasn't a good father because he never had to ask to his daughters who loved more him offering them a part of the kingdom. Women said that they loved him by convenience. For me, the history have two things to emphasize, or the King Lear doesn't want to see the reality or he was VERY VERY ingenuous.
The attitude of the King Lear makes me see red ;)

  14. According to what I have read, King Lear and the Earl of Glaucester suffered from his daughter's and sun's greed.
King Lear daughter's wanted him to die so they made him suffer and in the end he began to become mad. In Gloucester's case the basttard sun wanted the land so he platted against his brother. Up till now they wan in their plans.
My final comment is that people make a lot of bad things inorder to have money and land.

  19. King was wrong to want to find out what he felt for his daughters. Also he makes a mistake in the way they wanted to surrender his kingdom. The king has a big problem with his family, his daughters want him to get the best of the kingdom. The father should not have asked for their daughters who want more for them qe can lie to their benefit.

  20. King Lear was very ingenous because his daughters could lie him to take the biggest part of the kindom but it didn´t matter him. And when one of his daughters told him the thrust he get sad and he said her: "From today, I will not be your father. You will be a stranger to me and to my heart".At last, I can say that he wasn`t a good father.
