Writing: a biography (Energy 4 - Unit 7 FOCUS 5)

Today you must work with the following materials:
  • P. 130 in your textbook. Post your answers to exercises 1 (order the paragraphs) and 2 (label each section, following the model in the "Writing Tip") in the comments here. I'll confirm your contributions on Fri 10th! For exercise 3, work on the "hero" you've chosen for your project. Once you're ready, email it to me for a first revision... then you'll be ready to send it to the project website!
HELP: Paragraph #1 is d, and it provides "basic information".
  • Pp. 77 and 78 in your workbook. Answers to the workbook activities here.
Don´t forget you should be working on the project "My Hero" too!

Go or it!
Regards,
Gladys

  3. 1 and 2) Johnny Allen Hendrix was born on 27 November 1942. His father changed his name to James Marshall Hendrix when he was four, and bought him an electric guitar when he was eleven. His musical history had begun. (BASIC INFORMATION)
He started playing professionally in the 1960s. At the time, popular music was changing – a lot of new groups had arrived, but the pop scene was still old-fashioned and a bit boring. Jimi was invited to Britain to play. In 1996, he arrived in London and changed his name to Jimi Hendrix. He became a rock star almost immediately. (HISTORICAL CONTEXT)
Jimi was different because he was a fantastic guitar player. His playing had special ‘Jimi Hendrix’ sound. He changed people’s ideas of how a guitar could be played. (WHAT HE DID)
Jimi Hendrix died in September 1970, when he was twenty-seven. He is still popular now, more than thirty years after his death. In my opinion, he had an important effect on popular music. He changed the way that people play the guitar. (EFFECT ON HISTORY)

  4. Exercise 1 and 2a:

    1D.Basic information:
Johnny Allen Hendrix was born on 27 November 1942. His father changed his name to James Marshall Hendrix when he was four, and bought him an electric guitar when he was eleven. His musical history had begun.

    2B.Historical context:
He started playing professionally in the 1960s. At the time, popular music was changing – a lot of new groups had arrived, but the pop scene was still old-fashioned and a bit boring. Jimi was invited to Britain to play. In 1966, he arrived in London and changed his name to Jimi Hendrix. He became a rock star almost immediately.

    3A.What he did:
Jimi was different because he was a fantastic guitar player. His playing had special ‘Jimi Hendrix’ sound. He changed people’s ideas of how a guitar could be played.

    4C.Effect on history:
Jimi Hendrix died in September 1970, when he was twenty-seven. He is still popular now, more than thirty years after his death. In my opinion, he had an important effect on popular music. He changed the way that people play the guitar.

    Exercise 2b:
"In my opinion, he had an important effect on popular music. He changed the way that people play guitar."

  5. Thanks for your contributions, Gonzalo, Flor and Natalia!
The correct answers (according to the book authors) are:
    1. D (basic information)
    2. B (historical context)
    3. A (what he did)
    4. C(effect on history)
But I agree with Gonzalo that C could go third, and A last, because both paragraphs include a bit about Hendrix's life and a bit about the writer's opinion.

NB: REMEMBER THIS PARAGRAPH ORGANIZATION WHEN WRITING YOUR BIOGRAPHY ABOUT YOUR HERO
